Key Scientific Advances Towards the Discovery of D-Glucose
Glucose is a molecule so essential to many forms of life it seems unfathomable it took a process lasting over 150 years, and multiple great scientists to discover. The simple sugar is present in many fruits, plants, in the bloodstream, bacteria, and even some fungi. So, there were countless places for experimentation to lead to the discovery of the essential molecule. However, the initial acknowledgement and isolation of glucose came from a raisin by Andreas Maggraf. Later, scientists Jean Baptiste Andre Dumas and Emil Fischer had profound impacts in the modern day greater understanding of glucose. With the fact glucose is present in countless organisms, it is essential for scientists to have a deep understanding of the molecule when developing medicines and new dietary suggestions. D-glucose occurs naturally and today, is thought of as a simple molecule, as after all it is a mere monosaccharide. However, it took multiple brilliant minds and a Nobel Prize along the way, in contributing towards the understanding of D-Glucose.
